Action & Expression

This activity offers many avenues for creative expression using the design software of their choice.

Representation

Students are encouraged to choose a movie poster that is meaningful to them which broadens representation.

Engagement

Engagement is optimized but using relevant examples from pop culture. Allowing the students to choose their own examples, makes the experience even more memorable.

Sometimes students get overwhelmed by seemingly endless possibilities. The teacher can have a few examples ready if there are any students who get stuck choosing.

The Tool

instructions for students

what the teacher does

Models the analysis of real world examples pinpointing the specific characteristics of the typefaces that can be attributed to its personality. The teacher makes the thinking visible by giving the observations namable qualities.

what the student does

Takes an example of a famous movie poster and changes the typography to give it a whole new meaning.

 why?

This activity illustrates the power of visual inflection in an unmistakable way.

  1. Search online for a movie poster.

  2. Place the image of your chosen movie poster into Photoshop and remove the title.
Experiment with different typefaces to rewrite the title. The goal is to change the meaning dramatically.

  3. Share three examples with the class.
